Consular Processing

Consular processing is the pathway to obtaining an immigrant visa (green card) at a US embassy or consulate abroad, as an alternative to adjustment of status within the US. After the underlying immigrant petition (I-140, I-130, or I-526E) is approved, the case is transferred to the National Visa Center (NVC), which schedules an interview. Processing at NVC takes 2-6 months, and the interview typically results in same-day approval. Consular processing is required for applicants who are outside the US or ineligible for AOS.
