Adjustment of Status (AOS)
Adjustment of Status (Form I-485) is the process of changing from nonimmigrant to permanent resident status while physically present in the United States. Filing fee is $1,140 (plus $85 biometrics). Benefits include receiving an EAD and Advance Parole (combo card) while the case is pending, allowing work and travel. Processing time is currently 8-24 months depending on the category. AOS applicants must not have violated their immigration status. The alternative is consular processing at a US embassy abroad.
