Credit Scores: What Business Owners Get Wrong
Business owners routinely have excellent finances and mediocre credit scores. The reason is almost never late payment. It is that the score is calculated from the balance reported on the statement closing date, not from what remains after the bill is paid in full.
An owner who runs $30,000 a month of company spending through a personal card and clears it every month looks, to the scoring model, like someone carrying $30,000 of revolving debt.
In this article, we cover the statement-date mechanism, why moving that spending to a business card fixes it, how rate shopping is treated, and the score threshold beyond which nothing further improves.
1. The Statement Date, Not the Due Date

Card issuers report to the credit bureaus once a month, and the figure they report is the balance at the statement closing date — typically three weeks before payment is due.
Paying in full on the due date does not change the number that was already reported. Utilisation, the ratio of reported balance to available credit, is roughly thirty percent of a FICO score, second only to payment history. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sets out how the ratio works.
Two fixes follow directly. Pay the balance down before the statement closes rather than after, or ask the issuer for a higher limit, which lowers the ratio without changing behaviour at all.
Utilisation is measured twice: across all cards combined, and on each individual card. A single card near its limit can drag the score even where the overall ratio looks comfortable, which is why spreading a large balance across two cards sometimes helps more than paying part of it down.
Closing an unused card works against you for the same reason. The limit disappears from the denominator while the balances stay, so the ratio rises without any change in spending. Our guide to banking for owners covers how to structure accounts alongside this.
2. Why a Business Card Solves It

Most business credit cards report to the commercial bureaus rather than the consumer ones. The balance does not appear on the owner's personal credit file at all.
Moving $30,000 of monthly company spending from a personal card to a business card can lift a personal score by fifty to a hundred points, with no change in spending, income or payment behaviour — the debt simply stops being reported against the individual.
| Personal card | Business card | |
|---|---|---|
| Reports balance to consumer bureaus | Yes | Usually no |
| Counts in personal utilisation | Yes | Usually no |
| Personal guarantee required | n/a | Commonly yes |
| Late payment can hit personal file | Yes | Often yes |
| Effect of high monthly spend on score | Substantial | Minimal |
General behaviour; individual issuers differ. Confirm reporting practice with the issuer before relying on it.
As the table shows, the separation is not total. Most business cards still require a personal guarantee, and serious delinquency can reach the personal file — what changes is the routine month-to-month balance reporting, which is exactly the part that was suppressing the score.
There is a second benefit that has nothing to do with the score. Separating company spending from personal spending is one of the practices that supports the liability protection an entity is supposed to provide, and it makes the bookkeeping defensible — the point our article on S corp and LLC choices makes about respecting the separation in practice.
Charge cards behave differently again. Because they carry no preset spending limit, some issuers report them in a way that keeps them outside the utilisation calculation entirely, which suits an owner with large and uneven monthly volume. Ask the issuer how the account is reported before assuming either treatment.
3. Rate Shopping Is Not Penalised

A persistent fear stops borrowers comparing lenders: that each application damages the score. For mortgages and similar instalment loans, it is largely unfounded.
Scoring models group multiple enquiries of the same type within a short window and count them as one. Depending on the model, that window runs roughly fourteen to forty-five days. Comparing five lenders inside it costs the same as approaching one.
Credit card applications are treated differently and are not grouped, so spacing those out remains sensible. For a self-employed borrower the gain from shopping is larger than for a salaried one, because underwriting standards vary more — a point our article on the self-employed mortgage develops.
Timing still matters in one respect. Opening any new account shortly before a mortgage application changes the file the lender pulls, and lenders commonly re-check credit immediately before closing. The safe rule is simple: open nothing new between application and completion.
Soft enquiries are a separate category and cost nothing at all. Checking your own file, and the pre-qualification tools most lenders offer, do not register as applications — which means the early comparison work can be done before any hard enquiry is triggered.
4. The Objection: Chase the Highest Score

However, some owners treat the score as a number to maximise, opening and closing accounts to optimise the average age of credit and pushing toward 800.
The effort is largely wasted above a certain point. Lenders price in bands, and the top band for most mortgage products begins around 740 — an applicant at 800 and one at 745 are typically offered the same terms. Beyond the threshold, the marginal point buys nothing.
What does still matter above 740 is the shape of the file: a long history, no recent delinquency, and a mix of account types. Those are built by leaving good accounts open and paying on time, not by optimisation.
One habit does pay above the threshold, and it is passive. Check the file annually with each of the three bureaus, because errors are common and a mistaken delinquency takes weeks to remove. Finding it before an application is far easier than disputing it during one.
5. Final Thoughts

Three changes cover most of the available improvement. Separate company spending onto a business card. Pay personal balances before the statement closes rather than after. Request higher limits on cards you already hold.
Then stop. Once the file sits comfortably above 740 with no recent delinquency, further effort produces no better borrowing terms, and the time is better spent on the loan file itself.
Scoring models and issuer reporting practices change, so confirm the current position with your issuer and lender rather than relying on any single rule here. If you are preparing to buy in New York and want the credit file and the entity structure lined up before you apply, speak with our team.

Schedule a ConsultationFrequently Asked Questions
Why is my credit score low when I pay my card in full every month?
Because issuers report the balance as at the statement closing date, not after payment. A card cleared in full on the due date can still have reported a large balance three weeks earlier, and that reported figure drives the utilisation component of the score.
What is credit utilisation and how much does it matter?
The ratio of reported balances to available credit. It accounts for roughly thirty percent of a FICO score, second only to payment history, and it is recalculated each month from what issuers report.
Do business credit card balances affect my personal credit score?
Usually not. Most business cards report to commercial bureaus rather than consumer ones, so the monthly balance does not appear on the personal file. Serious delinquency can still reach it, and a personal guarantee is commonly required.
How much can moving spending to a business card help?
Where large monthly volume was running through a personal card, a lift of fifty to a hundred points is realistic, because the reported balance driving utilisation disappears from the personal file. Nothing about income or payment behaviour needs to change.
Does comparing mortgage lenders hurt my credit score?
Scoring models group multiple enquiries of the same type within a short window — roughly fourteen to forty-five days depending on the model — and count them as a single enquiry. Credit card applications are not grouped in the same way.
Is a score of 800 better than 740 for getting a mortgage?
Generally not in pricing terms. Lenders work in bands and the top band for most mortgage products begins around 740, so applicants above that threshold are usually offered the same terms.
How can I lower utilisation without spending less?
Two ways: pay the balance down before the statement closing date so a smaller figure is reported, or request a credit limit increase, which reduces the ratio without changing behaviour at all.
