What is the F-1 Visa?

The F-1 visa is the most common type of student visa in the United States. It is issued to international students attending an accredited U.S. college, university, seminary, conservatory, academic high school, or other academic institution, including language training programs.

Eligibility Requirements

Accepted by a SEVP-certified school

Enrolled in a full course of study

Proficient in English or enrolled in English-learning courses

Sufficient financial resources for tuition and living expenses

Maintained residence abroad with no intention of abandoning

Application Process

Receive Form I-20 from the accepted school

Pay the SEVIS fee (I-901)

Complete Form DS-160 online

Schedule and attend a visa interview

Receive F-1 visa stamp in passport

Duration of Stay

Duration of status (length of academic program)
