The H-1B is a nonimmigrant work visa for 'specialty occupation' positions requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. The annual cap is 65,000 visas plus 20,000 for US master's degree holders. In FY2025, USCIS received 442,000+ registrations for 85,000 slots — a selection rate of approximately 19%. The visa is valid for 3 years, extendable to 6 years. Employers must pay the prevailing wage and file a Labor Condition Application (LCA). H-1B allows dual intent, so holders can pursue a green card simultaneously.
