The F-1 student visa allows foreign nationals to study full-time at a SEVP-certified US institution (university, college, language school, or K-12). Students must maintain full course load and can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during school. After graduation, F-1 holders may apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training) — 12 months of work authorization, extended to 36 months for STEM fields. F-1 students must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses (typically $30,000-$80,000/year depending on the institution).
