Green Card Lottery 2026: DV Program Application Guide and Tips
The Diversity Visa (DV) lottery program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, provides up to 55,000 immigrant visas annually to individuals from countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States. The program is free to enter and offers a unique opportunity for those who might not qualify through other immigration pathways.
Who Can Apply for the DV Lottery?
Eligibility is based on two main criteria: country of birth and education or work experience. Applicants must be natives of eligible countries, which are determined annually by the U.S. Department of State. Countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the previous five years are excluded.
Additionally, applicants must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, or two years of qualifying work experience within the past five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience.
The Application Process
Applications are submitted online through the official DV lottery website (dvprogram.state.gov) during a limited registration period, typically from early October to early November each year. There is no filing fee. Each applicant may submit only one entry per year. Duplicate entries result in disqualification.
The application requires personal information, a recent digital photograph meeting specific requirements, and details about education and employment. Married applicants should include their spouse and all unmarried children under 21.
Photo Requirements and Common Mistakes
The photograph is one of the most critical elements. It must be a recent (within 6 months) 600x600 pixel digital image with a white or light background. The applicant must face the camera directly with both eyes open and a neutral expression. Glasses are not permitted in DV lottery photos.
Common reasons for disqualification include submitting photos with incorrect dimensions, wearing head coverings (except for religious reasons), having shadows on the face, and using photos that are too old or digitally altered.
What Happens If You Are Selected?
Results are announced in May following the registration period. Selected applicants receive a confirmation number and instructions for completing Form DS-260 (Immigrant Visa Application). Being selected does not guarantee a visa. Applicants must still pass background checks, medical examinations, and interviews.
Selected applicants should act quickly. The 55,000 visas are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis among selectees, and the fiscal year deadline is September 30. Delays in processing can result in missing the cutoff.
Important Tips for DV Lottery Applicants
Never pay a third party to submit your DV lottery application. The program is free. Scam websites that charge fees are not affiliated with the U.S. government. Always use the official website. Keep your confirmation number safe, as it is the only way to check your selection status. Apply early in the registration window to avoid technical issues near the deadline.
