An RFE is a USCIS notice requesting additional documentation or information to support a pending petition or application. RFEs are not denials — they indicate the officer needs more evidence before making a decision. Common RFE triggers include insufficient proof of investment source (E-2), questionable specialty occupation (H-1B), or incomplete financial documentation (EB-5). Applicants typically have 30-87 days to respond. Approximately 25-35% of H-1B petitions receive RFEs. A thorough initial filing significantly reduces RFE risk.
