A registered agent (also called 'statutory agent') is a person or company designated to receive legal documents, tax notices, and government correspondence on behalf of a business. Every LLC or corporation must maintain a registered agent in its state of incorporation. The agent must have a physical address (not a PO box) in that state and be available during business hours. Registered agent services typically cost $50-$300/year. For foreign-owned businesses, using a professional registered agent service ensures compliance even when owners are abroad.
