Removal (formerly 'deportation') is the formal process of expelling a foreign national from the US. Grounds include immigration violations (overstaying, unauthorized work, fraud) and criminal convictions. Removal proceedings take place in Immigration Court before an Immigration Judge (IJ). The individual may apply for relief such as cancellation of removal, asylum, or voluntary departure. A removal order can result in a 5-10 year bar on re-entry (or permanent bar for certain offenses). In FY2024, approximately 270,000 individuals were removed from the US.
