Il existe deux sous-catégories : le L-1A pour les gestionnaires et cadres supérieurs, et le L-1B pour les employés ayant des connaissances spécialisées. L'employé doit avoir travaillé à l'étranger pour la même organisation pendant au moins un an au cours des trois dernières années. Le L-1A peut mener directement à une carte verte EB-1C sans longues files d'attente.
