La carte verte est le document officiel attestant du statut de résident permanent aux États-Unis. Elle permet à son titulaire de travailler pour n'importe quel employeur, de voyager librement et de parrainer certains membres de sa famille. Après cinq ans de résidence permanente (ou trois ans pour les conjoints de citoyens américains), le titulaire peut demander la naturalisation.
