La loterie de la carte verte est organisée chaque année par le Département d'État américain et sélectionne aléatoirement des gagnants parmi les candidats éligibles. Les ressortissants de pays ayant envoyé plus de 50 000 immigrants aux États-Unis au cours des cinq dernières années sont généralement exclus. Les gagnants doivent satisfaire aux exigences d'admissibilité standard et obtenir un visa d'immigrant.
