Eine SSN wird von der Social Security Administration (SSA) ausgegeben und ist für alle arbeitenden Personen in den USA erforderlich. Ausländer, die keine SSN erhalten können, können stattdessen eine ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) für Steuerzwecke beantragen. Die SSN dient auch als Grundlage für den Aufbau einer US-Kreditgeschichte.
