Das O-1A-Visum gilt für Wissenschaft, Bildung, Wirtschaft und Athletik, während das O-1B für Kunst, Film und Fernsehen vorgesehen ist. Der Nachweis außerordentlicher Fähigkeiten kann durch Auszeichnungen, Veröffentlichungen, hohe Gehälter oder Mitgliedschaft in angesehenen Organisationen erbracht werden. Das O-1-Visum kann in Schritten von bis zu drei Jahren verlängert werden.
